Filipino Artists, Betsy Cola and CJ De Silva, Illustrate Netflix Female Characters to Celebrate Women’s Month

10:55:00 AM

This International Women’s Month, Netflix puts the spotlight on its strong, diverse, and authentic female characters through the eyes of two Filipino artists, Betsy Cola and CJ De Silva. They’re two talented Pinoy illustrators who share their favorite female Netflix characters through stunning artwork in their own signature style.

Check out what they have to say about their work:

CJ De Silva

Seo Dal-mi from Start-Up

“I am 100% Team Dal-mi! She’s unapologetically ambitious and street-smart. She’s a pragmatic dreamer who’s fascinated by brilliant ideas and takes risks to bring it to life.”

Enola Holmes from Enola Holmes

“I wish I had an Enola Holmes to look up to when I was a young girl. I hope a lot of parents saw this movie. Because imagine raising a girl in a home filled with knowledge, skills, art and most of all, freedom!”

Max from Stranger Things

“I love Max so much I named our second cat after her. I love how she shook the boys out of their geeky snobbery, beating Dustin at Dig Dug and proving that she’s an essential part of the ‘Party.’ But more importantly, I also love how her relationship with Eleven evolved: from being someone Eleven was initially jealous of, to the best of friends who want the best for each other.”

Maeve and Aimee from Sex Education

“Maeve and Aimee’s friendship is a powerful representation of female friendships  -- being each other’s source of strength and bravery.”

Yuzuha Usagi from Alice in Borderland

“I identified with [Usagi’s] introversion and her sense of independence. I also think her being a mountain climber is such a powerful symbolism for the mountain of struggles women face.”

Devi Vishwakumar from Never Have I Ever

“[Devi] is a nerd and proud of it. She’s intelligent and eloquent, but still naive and makes a lot of mistakes. She’s got a temper and that doesn’t make her a bad person, it normalises vulnerability.”

Betsy Cola

Beth Harmon from The Queen’s Gambit

“I couldn't look away from Beth's journey in The Queen's Gambit. It was great to watch her embrace her femininity at a time when women have to endure so much in order to be respected in a male-dominated field like chess.”

Vivian and Lucy from Moxie

“I've always been fascinated with the Riot Grrrl culture and movement, and when I saw that Moxie was inspired by that same fierce, feminist spirit, I was thrilled. I decided to illustrate Vivian, whose warranted anger pushed her to fight for her fellow female students, and Lucy, who is so inspiring by being unapologetically herself.”

Captain Jang from Space Sweepers

“It's rare to see a woman front and center in a sci-fi blockbuster, but even rarer to see a woman of color in that spot. Captain Jang from Space Sweepers is a badass leader in every way.”

Penelope and Eloise from Bridgerton

“Penelope and Eloise stand out because amid the societal pressure of getting married and becoming perfect marriage material, they demand to be seen as women who can be more than what is expected of them.”

Mildred Ratched from Ratched

“She's a complex woman with a traumatic past, and while she has to present a cold front in a male-dominated world, she also gets a queer love story -- which is great to see in a period piece!”

Pixar Animator Unveils “Incredible” Family Portraits Of Teams Kramer, Dantes And Belo-Kho

5:51:00 PM

MANILA, June 13, 2018 – Disney-Pixar's “Incredibles 2” held its Philippine premiere June 11 at the SM Aura IMAX Cinema, heralding the return of the beloved Parr brood of superheroes.

Adjunct to the premiere was the unveiling of family portraits created by Pixar animator Bryn Imagire who flew in from the US to for the film's Manila launch. Credited as the Shading Art Director of “Incredibles 2,” Imagire interpreted the Dantes (Dingdong, Marian Rivera & daughter Zia), Kramer (Doug, Cheska and children Kendra, Scarlett & Gavin) and Belo-Kho (Vicky, Hayden and daughter Scarlet) families as “Incredible” supers.

All three families attended the big reveal, visibly delighted by their portraits.

In his Instagram post after the event, Dingdong Dantes wrote, “Many thanks to Bryn Imagire... [S]he made us her own interpretation of a Dantes Incredibles family portrait! What an honor and privilege!”

For his part, Doug Kramer shared, “What an honor it was to be one of the 3 families that Ms Bryn Imagire sketched through the #Incredibles2 theme here in the Philippines!”

Not to be outdone, Vicky Belo raved “How incredible is this version of our family portrait by Bryn Imagire! Thank you Bryn, its such an honor to be immortalized by you!”

The “Incredible” family portraits are currently on public display at the SM Aura Atrium.

"Incredibles 2” opens in Philippine cinemas nationwide on Thursday, June 14, 2018. Join the conversation online by using the hashtags #Incredibles2 and #IAmIncrediblePH

About Incredibles 2

In “Incredibles 2,” Helen (voice of Holly Hunter) is called on to lead a campaign to bring Supers back, while Bob (voice of Craig T. Nelson) navigates the day-to-day heroics of “normal” life at home with Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), Dash (voice of Huck Milner) and baby Jack-Jack—whose super powers are about to be discovered. Their mission is derailed, however, when a new villain emerges with a brilliant and dangerous plot that threatens everything. But the Parrs don’t shy away from a challenge, especially with Frozone (voice of Samuel L. Jackson) by their side. That’s what makes this family so Incredible.

Written and directed by Brad Bird (“Iron Giant,” “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille”) and produced by John Walker (“The Incredibles,” “Tomorrowland”) and Nicole Grindle (“Sanjay’s Super Team” short, “Toy Story 3” associate producer), Disney•Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” busts into theaters on June 14, 2018.

In Focus: Kulayara Art Gallery

9:10:00 AM
I am a frustrated artist. I have always been fascinated with art, and have always tried to learn more about it when I have free time. I also love to visit galleries, specially the ones that are away from the mall to view art and see how it blends in to nature.

One gallery that satisfies these senses is Kulayara Art Gallery located at 28 Gutierrez Street, San Juan Manila. It was relaunched last May 25, 2016 with a stellar lineup of artists exhibiting their works.

Kulayara’s Suzette Hernandez Relaunches Her Art Gallery

8:18:00 AM

To fully appreciate how unique Kulayara Art Gallery is, aside from viewing its exhibits, one has to meet its owner, a businesswoman named Suzette Ramirez Hernandez. Suzette does not appear like the stereotypical art gallery owner, usually depicted in pop culture as uptight sophisticates. The thirty-something and soft-spoken Suzette, looks too cool and casual that no art enthusiast would feel too intimidated by her. Actually, given her charms and attributes – tall frame, voluptuous curves, longhair framing a pretty face – it usually is no surprise for people to approach.

And she likes it that way that she has evolved into becoming a woman who invites the attention, engages the company, and earns the camaraderie of people. “Diplomacy helps a lot in business,” Suzette notes, referring to her not-so-distant past which saw her almost pursuing a career in consulates. The woman behind Kulayara Art Gallery indeed has come a long way, all the way from roots that nobody imagined would lead her to the business of art. Not even her.
